Health Computing: Integrating Computational Thinking into Health Science Education

This project is to enhance computational thinking ability of health science students in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh.

News

  • Three CPATH team members at Pitt will publish one journal article in Spring 2013. The title of the article is "Flexible Approaches for Teaching Computational Genomics in a Health Information Management Program", and the journal is Perspectives in Health Information Management.

  • One poster titled "Development of an Agent-Based Model Simulating the Effects of Angioplasty and Bare-Metal Stent Implantation in an Atherosclerotic Blood Vessel" and authored by Antonia Curtin and Leming Zhou was presented at the 2012 Biomedical Engineering Society Annual Meeting (BMES 2012, Atlanta, GA (October 24-27, 2012). Antonia Curtin is an undergraduate student in the Department of Bioengineering at Pitt.

  • One poster about the evaluation of CPATH project was presented at the Annual American Evaluation Assoication (AEA) Conference in Minneapolis MN on October 22-27, 2012. The title of the poster was "The Role of Integrated Computational Thinking into Health Science Education: A Case Study of the Mixed-Methods Evaluation of CPATH". The authors were Yuanyuan Wang, Keith Trahan, Cynthia Tananis, and Leming Zhou.

  • One REU fellow, Paul Yenerall, published one journal article in September 2012. The title of the article is "Identifying the Mechanisms of Intron Gain and Loss: Progress and Trends" and the journal is Biology Direct.

  • One poster about the genomics course was presented at the Undergraduate Bioinformatics Education Conference at St. Vincent College, PA between May 31 and June 1, 2012.

  • One presentation titled "Computational Thinking in HIM Courses: A Dream to Reality" and authored by Valerie Watzlaf, Leming Zhou, Mervat Abdelhak and Qi Mi was presented at The AHIMA Assembly on Education (AOE) Summer Symposium, Orlando, FL. (July 21-25, 2012)

  • One REU undergraduate fellow, Paul Yenerall, presented his research poster at the 2nd IEEE International Conference on Computational Advances in Bio and Medical Sciences (ICCABS), Las Vegas, NV between February 23 and 25, 2012. The title of his research poster was " MIGL: A Database for Identifying the Mechanisms of Intron Gain and Loss".

  • One REU undergraduate fellow, Paul Yenerall, presented his research poster at the 53rd Annual Drosophila Research Conference in Chicago, IL between March 7 and 11, 2012. The title of his research poster was "Insights into the Mechanisms of Intron Gain and Loss Using Drosophila Genomes".

  • One poster about the genomics course was presented at the 53rd Annual Drosophila Research Conference in Chicago, IL between March 7 and 11, 2012.

  • Two undergraduate students, Paul Yenerall and Bradlee Krupa, published one journal article to report their research results in December 2011. The title of the article is "Mechanisms of Intron Gain and Loss in Drosophila" and the journal is BMC Evolutionary Biology.

  • One REU undergraduate fellow, Paul Yenerall, presented his research poster at the University of Pittsburgh Science 2011 on October 7, 2011. The title of his research poster was "Transposons, A Source of Novel Introns".

  • A poster presentation titled "Atherosclerotic Plaque Rupture and Thrombosis Formation: An Investigation Using Agent-Based Modeling Approach" and authored by Helmet Karim (One REU undergraduate fellow) and Leming Zhou was given at the 2011 Biomedical Engineering Society Annual Meeting (BMES 2011), Hartford, CT. (October 12-15, 2011)

  • A presentation titled "Teaching Genomics in the HealthInformation Management Department" and authored by Leming Zhou, Valerie Watzlaf, and Mervat Abdelhak was given at The AHIMA Assembly on Education (AOE) Summer Symposium, San Antonio, TX. (July 23-27, 2011)

  • A presentation titled "Integrating Computational Modeling Component into the Health Information Management Curriculum" and authored by Qi Mi, Valerie Watzlaf, and Leming Zhou was given at The AHIMA Assembly on Education (AOE) Summer Symposium, San Antonio, TX. (July 23-27, 2011)

  • A presentation titled "Integrating Telemedicine into the Health Information Management Curriculum" and authored by Sajeesh Kumar, Mervat Abdelhak, and Leming Zhou was given at The AHIMA Assembly on Education (AOE) Summer Symposium, San Antonio, TX. (July 23-27, 2011)

  • One REU undergraduate fellow, Paul Yenerall, presented his research poster at the 52nd Annual Drosophila Research Conference, San Diego, CA. between March 30 and April 3, 2011. The title of his research poster was "Mechanisms of Spliceosomal Intron Gain and Loss: An Investigation and Review Using 12 Drosophila Species".

  • One undergraduate researcher, Bradlee Krupa, presented his researcher work at the University of Pittsburgh Undergraduate Research Fair on March 30, 2011. The title of his research poster was "Genome Viewer - A Web-based Tool for Comparing Bacteria Genomes".

  • CPATH project meeting was held on March 17, 2010.

  • Genomics course module (two 2hr lectures and two 2hr labs) was offered to students enrolled in the Quality Management class in Spring 2011.

  • Information security course module (two 2hr lectures) was offered to students enrolled in the Electronic Health Record class in Spring 2011.

  • Programming course module (three 3hr lectures) was offered to students enrolled in the Applications of Statistical Concepts in HIM class in Spring 2010.

  • CPATH project meeting was held on December 7, 2010.

  • One REU undergraduate fellow, Helmet Karim, gave a presentation at the 8th Annual Rocky Mountain Bioinformatics Conference, Aspen/Snowmass, Colorado on December 10, 2010. The title of his talk was "Investigating Relationships between Obesity and the Built Environment Using Agent-Based Modeling".

  • Two undergraduate students, Helmet Karim and Paul Yenerall, presented their research poster at the University of Pittsburgh's Science2010 conference. The title of their poster was "Annotating Genes in Chromosomes of Drosophila Species Using Evidence-Based Approaches".

  • Information security overview lecture (one 2hr lectures) was offered in October 2010 in the Introduction to Health Information and the Healthcare System.

  • Genomics overview lectures (two 2hr lectures) were offered since October 2010 in the Data Management and Analysis for HIM Professionals class.

  • Biomedical modeling overview lectures (two 2hr lectures) were offered in November 2010 in the Data Management and Analysis for HIM Professionals class.

  • CPATH project meeting was held on September 9, 2010.

  • One day tutorial on data mining was offered to undergraduate students enrolled in HIM Clinical Education 2 in June 2010.

  • One day tutorial on information security was offered to undergraduate students enrolled in HIM Clinical Education 2 in June 2010.

  • Four tutorial sessions (genomics, computer modeling, data mining, and information security, each was 90 minutes) were delivered to 99 selected high school students in July 2010.

  • Biomedical modeling course module (two 2hr lectures) were offered in May 2010 in the Epidemiology class.

  • CPATH project meeting was held on April 15, 2010.

  • Computational Genomics Module (two 2hr lectures, two 2hr-labs) was offered since March 24, 2010 in the Quality Management class.

  • Computer Programming Module (three 3hr lectures) was offered since March 23, 2010 in the Applications of Statistical Concepts in HIM class.

  • Abstract titled "Ways to Integrate Computational Thinking Into the Health Information Management Curriculum" and authored by Mervat Abdelhak, Leming Zhou, and Valerie Watzlaf was accepted for the AHIMA Assembly on Education (AOE) Summer Symposium to be held in New Orleans, LA from July 26-28, 2010.
