We work with University of Pittsburgh Health Career Scholars Academy (UPHCSA) to reach high school students.
Brief Description about UPHCSAHealth care is an important and changing world that offers a wide range of careers in scientific research, medicine, mental health, public health, social work, rehabilitation, and administration, to name a few. It is also a world that increasingly demands highly skilled and knowledgeable practitioners who are well versed in the economical, cultural and personal implications for consumers. The University of Pittsburgh Health Career Scholars Academy (UPHCSA) introduces the students to the world of health care, emphasizing issues of primary care, prevention, public health, human growth and development, and areas of practice.The UPHCSA offers a unique learning experience for the students. The curriculum features didactic lectures, experiential venues, small group discussions, reflective exercises, individual and group presentations, mentoring, and self-study. The students are also given time to use the library and computer labs at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The focus of the UPHCSA program is to expose the students to a diverse set of issues that impact health care delivery and health professional education. This, in turn, stimulates critical thinking about his or her role as a future health care professional and community leader. Academically talented high school students who are juniors at the time of the application deadline may apply to the Health Career Scholars Academy. Applicants are asked to demonstrate academic achievement, especially in the sciences, an interest or potential in health care and a record of leadership and service activities. Tuition, room, board, instructional materials and curriculum related social activities are included in the program fee.
